The Bellary region of Karnataka comes alive with the vibrant celebration of Jaathre, an annual temple fair that encapsulates the essence of community, culture, and tradition. From the bustling marketplace to the tantalizing array of flavors, Jaathre offers a sensory feast for all who partake in its festivities
As children, the promise of pocket money for Jaathre filled us with eager anticipation. Granny would hand us a small sum, which felt like a fortune, and we would carefully budget every paisa to maximize our enjoyment at the fair. With dreams of indulging in delicious treats and exploring the wonders of Jaathre buying the balloons, and pistols, we embarked on our adventure with pockets jingling and hearts brimming with excitement.
The whole family used to go to Jaathre on a traditional bullock cart, and later, sometimes, we’d switch to a tractor. Even now, the imagery of those rides remains vivid in our minds.
the air is filled with the sounds of laughter, chatter, and the occasional musical performance, creating an atmosphere of lively excitement and anticipation.
From savory snacks like spicy bajjis with Mandakki(Puffed rice)+karaboondi(Mixture) to sweet treats like Kardantu, Battasu(Sugar candy), and aromatic jaggery candies, there is something to tempt every palate and satisfy every craving.
As we look back on those cherished memories of Jaathre and Granny’s culinary delights, we are filled with a sense of nostalgia and gratitude for the simple joys of childhood. Though times may have changed, the memories of Jaathre pocket money and Granny’s traditional delicacies remain etched in our hearts, serving as a reminder of the love, laughter, and warmth that defined those precious moments spent with family.
