A 15th Century Ancient Veerabhadreshwara Temple -Linganthyaru, Bangadi Village Belthangady

It was an unanticipated surprise visit to this temple on my way to Kolli Shri Durga Temple to catch the spectacular view of Kudremukha Hills during Monsoon in first week of June 2020.

As I was in Belthangady to attend my Bro-in-law marriage in Navooru village and the previous night had witnessed a heavy downpour due to Nisarga Cyclone at the Arabian sea. The weather was a very pleasant with fresh breeze  from Kudremukha evergreen forests.

After crossing the Indabettu village , I happened to glance on one ancient temple dedicated to Shree Veerabhadreshwara , upon inquiring a local about this temple , I understood that it was an ancient temple of Veerashaiva community with ongoing pooja to the main deity.

It was a small temple dedicated to Lord Veerabhadreshwara & Bhadrakali with Daiva parivaras (Local Spiritual) in the temple area , with architecture sculpted in the Hoysala-Vijayanagara style having big Granite stones on the walls and the mortar on the gopuras.

Inside the temple premise, one can find two inscriptions . One is older dated to 15^th Century and the other about the Jeernodhara (Renovation) and preservation done by Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari Shri Veerendra Heggade with the help of Karnataka Archaeological department.

15^th Century Stone Inscription tablet:

This inscription dated back to 1473 A.D, November 4 records it as a gift of land by Kami(ra)ya-arasa also called Banga to Nanjappa (A Veerashaiva priest) for worshipping god Veerabhadradeva of Bamgavadi (Bangadi).

It was stipulated that the land was to be enjoyed by the done hereditary and if he did not have any issues the gifted land would be the property of god Veerabhadradeva¹.

2        ರಶ್ಚುಂಬಿ | ಚಂದ್ರಚಾಮರಚಾರ[ರ*]ವೇ ತ್ರಯಿಲೋ-

3        ಕ್ಯನಗರಾರಂಭಂ | ಮೂಲಸ್ತಂಭಾ-

4        ಯ ಶಂಭವೇ  || ಸ್ವಸ್ತಿ ಜಯಾಭ್ಯುದಯ-

5        ವಹ ಶಕವರುಷ 1394 ನೆಯವರ್ತ್ತಮಾನ ವಿಜ-

6        ಯ ಸಂವತ್ಸರದ ಕಾರ್ತ್ತಿಕ ಶು 15 ನೆ[ಉ] ಬಂಗ

I felt glad to see the renovation and the re-development of the historical temple carried by Shri Kshetra Dharmasthala Shree Manjunatheshwara Dharmotthana trust headed by Pujya Veerendra Heggade.

It reminds us not only about the historical significance of one temple in ancient times and about Bangadi (Bamgavadi) ruled by Banga Arasu and they sub-ordinate to Alupas – Vijayanagar Kingdom.
